We recently visited the islands of Capri for an annual Sinner’s excursion to paradise. We sailed through crystal blue lagoons located in swimming distance from the great Mount Vesuvious on the voyage from Pomentero to Capri and typically did what everyone does then they go…attempt to recreate that Dolce & Gabbana advert where David Gandy is marooned on a floating vessel with a very unattractive woman (she’s ridiculous). My return to London was particularly miserable until the Sinner stumbled across Frescobaldi who had successfully partnered with renowned Head Chef Franco Averso, infamously responsible for all dishes served at Capri’s most exclusive restaurant, Aurora and who has an A List following that includes Jay Z & Beyonce, Giorgio Armani and now…You. This world class collaboration incorporated Italy’s oldest wine making dynasty with a legacy of expertise dating back to 1308 and sits in a secluded street, just off Savile Row in Mayfair, London.
Restaurants in Mayfair can sometime come hand in hand with making you feel a teeny bit insignificant if you don’t exude wealth and a weighty disposable income, but the warmth and welcome you feel on entry to Ristorante Frescobaldi resembles the embrace a Mother gives you every time you return home to the suburbs. There’s an open and bright restaurant upstairs boasting an impressive tower of authentic wines and canape of grapes vines elegantly intertwined across the ceiling. And downstairs presents a private dining room that resembles the luxury of a tastefully decorated yacht, moored on the shores of the Amalfi coast, with both floors showcasing the stunning artwork of artists known personally by the Frescobaldi Family.
We had the pleasure of sampling the Aurora & Frescobaldi match made in heaven menu and began with Saffron Arancini, complemented beautifully with Danzante Prosecco, Spumante Extra Dry V.S.Q.A. To follow, Octopus Salad with Green Beans served with a crisp Chardonnay di Toscana. Please note, I’ve never liked Chardonnay, until I tried this and Frescobaldi are like the Cilla Black to the restaurateur and the hosts can be instantly trusted to pair fine wine with fine dine based on your palette and choice of dish.
We gained further sensory satisfaction in the form of the must have Pappardelle with Black Truffle. Opulent, beautifully prepared and spectacularly presented with a deliciously powerful scent that all truffle lovers immediately recognise and adore. This dish was the Sinner’s favourite and will send you into a closed eyed state of stupor as you slowly savour every bite and is complimented with an incredibly smooth Chianti Rufina Riserva.
And the dessert…was a Caprese Cake with Almond Ice Cream and Burnt Meringue, signed Aurora in delicious chocolate reduction and served so stunningly to the point of you feeling guilty in tucking in and disturbing the ‘feng shui’ of a plate so easy on the eye.
Aurora met Frescobaldi in November 2016 however, Ristorante Frescobaldi continues to reinvent itself, by hosting regular Guest Chef events. They invite only the most critically-acclaimed chefs from around the world to work with its kitchen and develop a distinct menu that lasts for up to a fortnight only. Previous guest chefs have included Inanc Baykar from Aman da Bravo in Istanbul, and Maurizio Locatelli from Hotel Cala di Volpe in Sardinia and 2017 is set to host many more.
Keep your eyes peeled, a beautifully welcoming gem in the heart of London’s prestigious Mayfair.
